COURSE DESCRIPTION
Advanced Placement U.S. History is a college-level introductory course that examines the nations’ political, diplomatic, intellectual, cultural, social, and economic history from 1491 to the present. A variety of instructional approaches are employed and a college-level textbook is supplemented by primary and secondary sources.
Semester 1
Unit 1 Pre-Columbus and Early Contact
Unit 2 Colonial America
Unit 3 American War for Independence
Unit 4 The Early Federal Period
Unit 5 Jacksonian Democracy, A National Economy, and Antebellum Reform
Unit 6 Manifest Destiny and Sectionalism
Unit 7 Civil War and Reconstruction
Unit 8 Gilded Age
Semester 2
Unit 9 Westward Expansion and Imperialism
Unit 10 Progressivism and World War I
Unit 11 Twenties and Thirties
Unit 12 World War II and Early Cold War
Unit 13 Fifties and Sixties
Unit 14 Seventies, Eighties, Nineties, & beyond
TEXTBOOK
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. You are required to bring your fully charged iPad with you to class every day.
2. Writing utensils: Pencils and black or blue-black pens
3. Organizational folder for handouts
4. Box of tissues
GRADING POLICY
Your nine weeks grade will be determined as follows:
A. DAILY GRADES (20%) (3-4 daily grades per unit)
* Homework, in-class assignments, and participation grade
B. TESTS (80%) (3-4 per 9-week grading period--essay, short answer, and objective)
*If you have an undocumented absence (coded as "A") on the day of a test, your test grade will appear
as a "1" in the grade book until it is cleared.
RETEST POLICY – retests will be available under the following stipulations:
LATE WORK/MAKE UP WORK/EXTRA CREDIT POLICY
No makeup work will be accepted after the unit exam.
NO extra credit will be given in this class
TUTORING
Will be available after school in the library on Tuesday and Thursday or by appointment
CHEATING POLICY
THE WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL HONOR CODE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED IN THIS CLASS.

- Optional: You can buy a class pack of Learning Targets for each unit at Kinko's (close to Randalls). We will be running copies for those who prefer to get them in class at the beginning of each unit.

- Will only be available for students who fail the exam (below a 70)
- Students will be given ONE WEEK after the date of the original exam to retake the test
- It will be a different exam.
- The retest grade will not exceed a 70.
